On December 26th, 2008, six Chinese suspects were brought on trial with charges of making and selling milk and other dairy products containing harmful chemicals that have so far, killed six young children, sickened at least 300,000 babies, putting over 340 infants in the hospital, and many in critical condition.One of the defendants, Zhang Yu Jun, 40, who was the owner of a factory workshop in Shandong Province was found illegally manufacturing “milk powder” containing melamine and dextrin. Melamine was found being the cause of death. Melamine, is a poisonous chemical used in the manufacture of plastics and fertilizers. Generally acceptable in small doses, melamine causes kidney ailments such as stones in children and animals when consumed in large amounts. Farmers and workers at milk collection centers added melamine with the sole purpose of raising the milk’s protein level so that it passes government tests. Another defendant, Zhang Yanzhang, 24, was pressed with the same charges as well as buying and reselling 230 tons of the same “powder.” Four other men were also accused in three other court cases across other provinces. Of the companies they sold to, the Sanlu Group was the main company involved in the Chinese scandal, according to Xinhua net.
